Words are stones in the stream of consciousness, things that divert the flow and to which one can cling when too tired to swim.  String enough of them together and they may form a stepping-stone bridge between one boulder-strewn shore and another.  With luck, some of them will erode or wash away, but even the smallest pebble has persistence to resist the tide.

These, then, are some of my pebbles.  I hope they don't prove themselves too well as stumbling blocks.  Perhaps you ought to fling them from you; skip these stones.
